It is called Glycyrrhiza Glabra called commonly as liquorice in English see the following link:

It do work in throat, in particular larynx( voice box), as well as in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. This function should be useful in autism and many modern ailments where the impairment to this axis is fundamental.

Liquorice root is one of the most wonderful herbal medicines we have today and highly prized by the Chinese in their healing work. What is very special about this herb is that its one of a very few herbs that can enter ever meridian in the body. Most of the herbal medicines out there can only enter 3-4 meridians etc but Liquorice enters all twelve main meridians (another great one is flower pollen aka bee pollen). It is also a great carrier herb like Cayenne meaning it helps to transport the medicinal properties of other herbs around the body more efficiently. Truly a wonderful herb.
