I would love to get your take on a challenge I've been facing for 10 years now. I've had a shortness of breath and other physical problems I suspect arose from the bad breathing habit. I have a new sensation of intense pain in my chest area close to my left armpit. My throat constricts and communicating (or talking) proves to be very difficult. I often have the sensation of wanting to yawn and feel like I am in a bubble when I talk. Others will often get tired or seem to suddenly have a shortness of breath in my presence. This result in me wanting to be alone often. Looking forward to your advice. Many thanks in advance, Lei.

Wow, thank you for your prompt and detailed response. I will try to answer all of your questions. Where to start? From the top, I guess.
My mind: can be very focused and calm (especially when meditating), as well as very agitated, frustrated, sad and depressed (in the face of the hopelessness of not being able to resolve this shortness of breath). I am a painter and use to be an actress, so I am creative in general. But even though I can be very productive with a deadline in front of me, I often wrestle with laziness. I find I am both full of joy for life, and full of despair at times (mainly because of the breathing). People see me as warm and open and I do have a general interest in others and often attempt to help them with their challenges...close friends as well as strangers.
Head: Brown hair (silky and healthy), hazel eyes (20/20 vision...but sometimes around my eyes I will have allergic reactions and they will become puffy and irritated, the left eye more frequently than the right. Often this will happen if I drink too much alcohol. Ears are fine (good hearing), nose is fine (no blocking), tongue is sometimes coated pale whitish pink. I brush it every morning. Lips are fine (red/pink), sometimes a little dry.
Skin: In the past I have had eczema. Presently I get a little on the creases of my arms, on my neck and a little on the backs of my knees. I first had eczema when I was a baby and my mother treated it with cortisone cream. Before the shortness of breath, when I was 25 years old, I had a very bad spell of eczema for about 6 months straight from head to toe. It was like a trade off...after 3 months of being free of eczema, the shortness of breath began. Skin-wise, I presently also seem to be getting a little acne on my chest and on my face.
Lymphatic system: I have found odd lumps (that I did check with a doctor and supposedly they are benign lumps). Nonetheless I seem to be getting more of them with time. I have a big one in my left forearm, two in my legs - one each, and one little one behind my right knee. Over the last few years the firmness in my legs seem to have gone, where before I always had a very athletic body. I now have cellulite that seems to be traveling down my legs. My mother's legs are still very much in shape and in good form. I find myself jealous of my mother's legs (she's 63, I'm 35). Craziness! I use to have circulator problems, whereby I would feel pulsation in my legs. Now when I wear high heels my legs and especially the back of my knees feel awfully tender and swollen.
Temperature preference: I like hot baths, and I like both cold and hot drinks, prefer hot weather...or rather sunny weather.
Food habits: generally I eat healthy, but sugar is my biggest weakness. I crave and indulge in sweets often. But otherwise I don't eat too much red meat (sometimes, yes) but generally I eat fish, chicken, lots of veggies, fruits, and lots of water. And some other stuff, but sweets is where I have little control. And I do like rich decadent meals too - restaurant treat. I guess the amount is also an area I could be more careful about. Although I am slim I eat large meals...often more than my stomach needs. I generally eat a lot, all the time.
Basics: I am 35 years old female, 5'7" (and a half), weigh 125-130 lbs. Olive skin color. I do have a discoloration/darker area of skin pigmentation on my back in between my shoulder blades. Don't know why.
Stomach: I digest fairly well, but on the rare occasion I might have diarrhea. More regularly I have soft sinking stools.
And supposedly I also have acid reflux...a little hernia between my stomach and my esophagus was detected and it was thought that acid reflux was happening and maybe was contributing to the breathing problem.
I don't have any troubles with urinating and it is often bright yellow as I drink Greens + (minerals and supplements) and it comes in a single stream, I believe.
Kidney: I did once have a kidney infection about 12 years ago. An acupuncturist told me recently that my kidney was weak and generating anger. He was trying to rebalance the chi energy.
What else? My nails grow fast and are strong. On occasion there are a few white marks on my nails. A lot less now than when I was young.
Sleep: I know when I wake up I am often very tense and my jaw is clenched. And the muscles in my upper body are completely stiff. My dentist says I grind my teeth. As of lately I have been remembering a lot of apocalyptic dreams...close to nightmares...some with dark black endless holes in the ground that I'm tossed into (but suddenly I'm able to fly), or a black tidal wave/energy field that comes chasing after me and then zooms right past me. I wonder about these intense dreams.
Teeth: As of recently I have slowly been attempting to remove the mercury fillings in my teeth. In November I had one replaced by one dentist and then in May I had another one replaced by a more affordable dentist. The latter worked on the tooth in two sessions. The first session was fine. I prepared with carbon so that I would not be too affected by the mercury seeping into the system. The second meeting he injected the anesthesia into my gums and he seem to hit a nerve that shot an electric sensation up my jaw into my head as well as down my jaw into my neck. I asked what that was and he said 'that must have been a bulls-eye, it will numb quicker'. I said 'okay, but don't try to get a bulls-eye again, that really hurt like hell.' And since then (now it's been a month and a bit) I've had a sharp pain in my left chest whenever I try to breathe in deeply. As well my left shoulder and left scapula is so tense. Pretty much my whole left upper body seems very tight and strained. The needle was injected on the right side of the mouth. A masseuse I went to see said that the back muscles were tight, as well as the arm and the chest muscles, but that the sharp pain was the constricted tense muscles squeezing a vein next to the heart. That worried me and now I attempt not as often to take deep breath, with this as a concern. I'm surprised the pain has not subsided after a whole month and a bit from when the nerve was hit.
Temper: I can be calm but I can lose my temper as well. Especially with those close to me. My frustration (in regards to the lack of ability to intake air without ease) gets projected on others whom are close to me. My frustration will often get expressed by blaming others around me for something they did not do right. I am stubborn and strong minded, but can also be very shy to speak in front of people. I do feel anxiety mainly because of the breathing. Before the shortness of breath I had a super calm easy going nature. I am anxious I guess that I never will be able to shift this discomfort. Also, I find that I can get closer to a clam mind when I am alone and so I often keep to myself, even though I have plenty of friends.
Parents: My father has had Melanoma Cancer before (15 years ago) and now he occasionally gets red spots that need to be removed, but otherwise he is in good shape. His memory seems to be going downhill, but he's still very active and vibrant. He's 73 years old. My mother has always had eczema as well, especially around her neck and eyes. She calls it allergies, but it is in a constant state of irritation. It seems around her eyes she has had an irritation and puffiness consistently for years now. She is a very vibrant person though and is now 63 years old.
Spirituality: I do have a Guru (Gurumayi) and I have been practicing Siddha Yoga off and on since I was 18 years old (17 years ago). There is a lot of meditation and singing involved. And the general idea is to respect one's inner power and inner voice within.
Shortness of Breath: About 10 years ago I changed life paths drastically. I was invited by my fiancé to move with him to another country and become a painter with his art group. So I eventually decided to do it. I left my life as an actress and eventually became a painter. Two month into this change of life I started to get intense eczema reactions. I eventually stopped painting thinking I might be allergic to the paint, but the eczema stayed for 6 months.... from head to toe. I was seriously advised by a doctor to take some cortisone pills. I did and the reaction subsided for the summer and then came back again in the winter. I decided after a few months of winter to take a break and so I left with the intention of coming back in 3 months time. I had a sunburn episode and a different doctor prescribed pill form cortisone again. Followed up by a homeopathic sulfur remedy for the skin. During those 3 months away from the art group I experienced a rebirth. My joy of life had returned and I was so excited about all that I could and would do, now that the eczema had left. 3 months later the eczema was still gone but suddenly I start experiencing an inability to take a deep breath. In the end I decided not to return to my financé and so there may also be some 'guilt' and 'heartbreak' emotions attached to this ailment. For 10 years the shortness of breath stuck. I do on occasion get a little eczema, nowhere near what I experienced during those 6 months, but now my biggest challenge is dealing with the sensation of being suffocated. It feels like my air passage is restricted, as well it feels like my lungs are not able to release the CO2 caught in there, so there is not enough space for more O2 to get in. The areas of intense constriction are around my throat and neck. As well my diaphragm feels inflexible and incapable of expanding. The upper chest and shoulder muscles work hard by rising upward in order to compensate the lack of space around the lungs and so tension starts to build in these areas. The energy that is lost from this physical challenge is immense, not to mention the money that has gone into trying to resolve it over the last 10 years. Energy-wise, I will often feel like doing nothing. And when I go and just do whatever I have to do (which happens often) what ever it might be (this is why I think I love deadlines) I experience my body ailing. But at least I've done something. What an existence. I know it can be much better. I know I can be engaged in action for the sheer joy of doing it. I would like to have more of that again. Like the pure pleasure of being able to intake a deep sweet breathe of air.
Treatments: I am familiar with homeopathy. Over the years I have visited different practitioners and have tried different remedies. I have tried many different alternative approaches, including acupuncture, chiropractor, osteopathy, yoga, nutritionist, massage, therapy, etc. I've taken asthma tests (3-4 times) I don't have it. I've done X-rays where they found a hernia. I've done the acid reflux test..I have a little. I've changed locations, stopped painting, changed lives again, I feel like I've done everything and nothing.
Yawning: I think it was always present during the last 10 years...a way to in-take air, I guess. But the last few years it seems to be more contagious with others. I will just speak and others will want to yawn, as if they unconsciously detect that I am not getting enough air and so (in the same way a yawn is contagious) they will either yawn or start experiencing shortness of breath. It psychologically trips me out, as I feel like I am taking other peoples energy.
Joint problems: My left shoulder clicks like five times when I rotate it. I crack my jaw often and my neck as well. When I twist in some yoga moves my back will crack here and there down the spine. But my jaw and my shoulders are the main clickers.
My Arms: I do have difficulty lifting the left arm, because of the tension in that area. My masseuse told me that I have large biceps and no triceps and so some of the tension in my upper body has to do with how I manage lifting weight. I depend all on one muscle when instead I should disperse it between many possible-supporting muscles.
Childhood illnesses: Chicken Pox, Shingles, Eczema, Allergic to cats, dust, pollen and some types of trees
Memory: I have a hard time remembering things...I feel overwhelmed with everything I have to remember and do sometimes. I seem to forget people's names more often now. And before I use to remember at least where I might have seen someone, where now I often don't remember ever meeting the person before. My concentration level is sometimes very low. I think it has a lot to do with the breathing, but that is my take on it. When I'm talking and someone interrupts me I will often completely forget what I was saying. The result is that I become easily agitated or nervous when I am interrupted.
Other: No hiccups, no bad breath, no heart problems, no bp, no diabetis, I do get cold feet and cold hands sometimes, no lumps in the arm pits though.
I want to thank you for receiving all of this. I really look forward to receiving your feedback. It's nice to come across someone who is so willing to help out. I appreciate it immensely. Many thanks again, Lei.

I do not think you have any problem with the lungs. Your main problem is acute and is related to your tooth extraction and that is what we need to attend to first and then look for hiatus hernia and then further into the lypomas/angiomas or whatever through Thuja and Natrum Mur.
Taking into consideration ineter alia these major symptoms :
1. Constriction around the neck and trachea
2. Cramp-like pain in masseter muscle
3. Dyspnœa as from constriction of trachea,
4. Choking constriction in upper part of œsophagus, oppressing breathing and inducing cough.
5. Cracking of cervical vertebræ when moving head. Paralytic pain in small of the back. Pain in shoulder and arms as if bruised. Pressure in scapula and nape. Stiffness on moving shoulders.
6. Spasmodic yawning.
7. Stiffness on scapula, back muscles, neck muscles, nape of neck and shoulders.
Possible symptoms not mentioned by you:
1. Dysmenorrhœa,
2. Knees crack on motion.
3. Constant drowsiness.
4. -Sensation of emptiness and cramp in chest.
5. Belching.
6. Abdomen.--Distended, with wind, and feeling as if full of sharp stones when moving; better, lying on one side or the other. Pain in abdominal ring, as if something were forced through. Abdominal muscles weak; it seems as if a hernia would take place.
7. Desire for cold drinks, especially beer.
8. Nausea on travelling in car or bus.
In view of the above symptoms please take three doses of Cocculus Indicus 30 three times a day for three days. Report after first day and third day. with best wishes.

In the above post, hiatus hernia was mentioned.
Can hiatus hernia be treated with homeopathy and avoid surgery?
Thanks

Great, thanks. I will try that remedy and get back to you with it's effects.
Just a note about the symptoms that you mentioned below:.
1. Dysmenorrhœa, (not really, but I guess I remember a few months when it was a little more intense)
2. Knees crack on motion. (Yes, when I bend down they crack)
3. Constant drowsiness. (Yes)
4. -Sensation of emptiness and cramp in chest. (Not sure about the emptiness, the cramping sensation in present though...a little left of the center of my chest as well on the soft part below the left collar bone and near the arm pit)
5. Belching. (Not really..a little maybe)
6. Abdomen.--Distended, with wind, and feeling as if full of sharp stones when moving; better, lying on one side or the other. Pain in abdominal ring, as if something were forced through. Abdominal muscles weak; it seems as if a hernia would take place. (I don't feel pain in my abdomen, no sharp stone feeling, but yes the muscles in this area are weak...my back does all the work).
7. Desire for cold drinks, especially beer. (No)
8. Nausea on traveling in car or bus. (No)
Thanks again. I will try the Cocculus Indicus 30, three times a day for three days. And I will report back to you. Until soon, Lei.

ok the possible symptoms do not change the suggested remedy. Possible symptoms could have happened is happening or may happen in an individual. It could also be that those symptoms may not happen to one individual but could happen to another individual and also may be that it will happen in an altogether set of different morbid condition. So Please go ahead with Cocculus Indicus 30 as suggested. with best wishes.

First morning since taking the remedy. Generally, when I wake up this is when I feel the most tension in my jaw, neck and left shoulder as well as left upper chest area. Seems to still be there. Doing lots of stretches to try and loosen it up a bit. I will continue taking the remedy for another two days and check back in. Many thanks.

This would mean that the glands within the soft space at the joint of shoulder with the neck above the collar bone is swollen. Use Belladonna 30 three doses only along with the cocculus to remove the swollenness of the glands if it is there.

That triangle spot above the collar bone does not feel swollen. If the glands are swollen would I be able to feel it?
There is, however, a very tender spot (feels like it is bruised, but no bruising found) on the back muscle located on the edge of the left shoulder blade (or scapula) near the inner upper corner section... the muscle in between the scapula and the spine. Pretty much in the same area or level on my chest there is a tender spot as well...almost as if something were pierced through the front (a couple inches below the collar bone) and coming out the back. Makes my arm feel weak..the whole left side is.
Should I bother adding the Belladonna 30 for the glands? I don't see any swelling above the collar bone. Many thank once again.

Bell basically works on lymph nodes and dilating the nerves. It should release any congestion in nervous system. It is also good for tooth related problems. You may only beneit using that. As far as the bruise is concerned, the best medicine for bruise of nerves we have is Hypericum. Your symptoms fully agreeing to cocculus I cannot avoid suggesting that first. With left side effected, the other medicine concerning facial nerves and nerves as a whole is spigelia. 30. I cannot be certain without knowing which nerve or muscle is precisely affected.

Thanks for the response. I will try the Belladonna 30 with the Cocculus 30. The Spigelia 30 also sounds appropriate as the tension in the jaw/neck/shoulders feel nerve oriented as well as muscle oriented. I suspect that my clenching of the jaw (especially unconsciously when I sleep) is causing much of the problem.
As the Cocculus is directly addressing the jaw through the masseter muscle, would it likely be addressing the jaw clenching? I have a feeling if I can stop the jaw clenching the rest will relax into a normal state again.
Also is it better to take one remedy at a time? Or is overlapping of more than two remedies more effective?
Thanks so much for all your time.

Bruxism can be caused inter alia due to Temperomandibular disfunction. In turn caused by the injection or forceful extraction of teeth etc. The stress and anxiety arising from that could lead to bruxism and similar behaviours. There is a need to relax the muscles and nerves of the area.
Here not only Spigelia, Hypericum and Causticum are extremely important. to release the tension as well as for cure. belladonna can remove the grinding aspect in the bruxism exhibited. Pulsatilla will help if there is swelling around the parotid (under ear) region.and Plantago Major 2X. But Spigelia Hypericum, Causticum Bell are highly recommended after Cocculus. These may be taken upto three doses for one day each only and stop where benefits are seen. One remedy at a time will give you fairly good picture as to which remedy is doing what. Normally these medicines can be overlapped if needed as none of them have any ill effects in combination. with best wishes.

Also check the symptoms of Podophyllum and use it in 30 potency three times a day for one day if symptoms agree. Symptoms that should go away on its use are tendency to press the gums together, grinding of the teeth, pain under scapula.

Thank you for your suggestions once again. I have tried the Cocculus Indicus 30, three times a day for three days and still seem to have the clenching of the jaw and pain in the left shoulder/scapula/chest/neck (especially after waking up in the morning). However, I think I did feel a subtle improvement. I'm not sure if this was the case or if it was partly my hope and excitement for a solution that gave me the impression maybe things were slightly improving. Should I continue taking this remedy?
I also took Spigelia Anthel. 30ch on it's own for 2 days and can not say that I see any improvement. I am planning to take the Belladonna 30ch next and go purchase Podophyllum 30 to take later. Would you suggest I get the Hypericum or the Causticum to try later on, after the Belladonna? Or is there perhaps too many remedies in my system at this point? Should I leave pauses (a day or two) in between the dosages of these different remedies?
Also do you think a chiropractor adjustment or realigning of my jaw and upper spine might be of benefit?
Thanks so much!

Dear Lei,
I would certainly suggest Hypericum and Causticum as causticum is meant for facial neuralgia and hypercium is general tonic for nerves. None of these medicines taken together or at close intervals is going to give any adverse symptoms in an average healthy person. So you need not worry that the medicines are too much for the system, in fact you are not taking any medicines but awakening the system itself into correcting itself.
Chiropractor adjusting or realigning the jaw is a welcome sign. I do not see too much of cervical spine involvement here than nerve involvement or glands of realignment of jaws.
If you had gone to a Dentist, distrubed alignment of the jaws has a very significant role. IN that case you should not be rushing, rather it take a few days from 15 to 20 days for the medicines to correct the jaws or for realignment naturally. When you are approaching a chiropractor, you should be certain that the person is knowledgeable and can do the job rather than fleecing you.
You can repeat cocculus if needed but I would prefer you go for hypericum and causticum and see which is giving the maximum benefit. I think you will come out of the problem soon. with best wishes.

Thank you. I will take the Hypericum and Causticum for the next few days and see what results emerge in regards to the tension in the jaw/neck/left chest/left shoulder.
Also, this morning, on a deeper emotional level I had the realization once again that beneath the shortness of breath there is a deep feeling of guilt and sadness for having left my finance back in Italy many years ago. Is there a remedy that can help me address this so as to let go of this deep ingrained guilt. It has affected my relationships ever since. And the shortness of breath began after I decided not to return to Italy. Which I think says a lot.
I am trying to address this issue with other tools as well, but wondered if there is a homeopathy remedy or two that could speed things up a little (in regards to guilt and sadness). Many thanks!

Hi Dr Udaya,
Since taking the Hypericum and Causticum I've been having awful tension in my jaw and in the back of my neck, along with an intense headache. Shortness of breathing is especially accentuated. Is this a sign that these remedies are working. Does it get worse before it gets better? Sure hope it gets better soon, because this is no fun.
Thanks for your feedback!

Dear Lei,
If there is tension in the jaw and in the back, it would indicate a nerve congestion and the body life force trying overtake that is unsuccessful. Normally this warrants for a higher potency of the same medicine. It could also be a natural aggravation which might have caused even if you have not taken the medicine.
The comforting factor is that you have antidotes for all the medicines in homeopathy and if doubt arises that the body life force after taking the medicine is not able to overcome the malady and is showing signs of aggravation, you can always antidote the medicines and see how it goes. Hypericum can be antidoted by Arsenic Album,. and Chamomilla. You can see both these medicines are indicated for you. So it could also be that these are complementary and necessary medicine that the body needs inorder to achieve success in the correction it is attempting. Arsenic Album 200 one dose would relieve your breathing problem tremendously. Chamomilla is soothing to nerves of the head, nerves of the ears and jaw and for tooth pain and related problems even in infants. It could be taken at 6C or 30C.
The antidotes to Causticum are Asafotida, Colocynthes, Dulcamera and Guajacum officianalis. For e.g. you can see Guajacum symptoms :
Head -Gouty and rheumatic pain in head and face, extending to neck. Tearing pain in skull; worse, cold, wet weather. Feels swollen, and blood-vessels distended. Aching in left ear. Pains often end in a stitch, especially in head.
Respiratory.--Feels suffocated. Dry, tight cough. Fetid breath after coughing. Pleuritic stitches. Chest pains in articulations of ribs, with shortness of breathing till expectoration sets in.
Thus these medicines can antidote and take over as complementary medicines.
Aches are always caused when there is a blockage of movement of air . The pain in the throat area and headache are also caused by the same blockage of air and its movement. The medicines are attempting to correct it and the push to clear the blockage perhaps is creating the higher tension.
With best wishes.
